Probably the case. The last two computers I picked up from Cragslist had dead batteries. The seller was amazed that I showed up with a keyboard and mouse, along with a monitor, and got both of them to boot.
Try zapping the PRAM. As long as the computer is plugged in it will continue to boot until you replace the battery.
