I understand your concerns. In the www world data mining is king, you see in the ads that relate to you on subsequent website visits.
Apples mindset is to bring you into their ecosystem. Products , hype, it just works etc. Their money is chiefly from hardware sales. Google makes very very minimal products , it's all about ads and data mining . That's how I see it, I'd opt for the more secure, non ad motivated big brother

Its free, yes,but they want your CC details so you MAY spend money later on something. Its a business, so all good. Add your CC, and continue to use free, no problemDepending on how paranoid one is about "big brother" surveilance, "no problem" might be a bit cavalier. It IS interesting that Apple Pay is promoted as a way to prevent merchants from learning how to target you with marketing, yet Apple wants your credit card number when you download something free. They'll have to stake a position more firmly on this privacy business if they really mean it, in my view.I just say "Citizen 4" about Ed Snowden. One vignette involves a EFF (Electronic Freedom Foundation) speaker talking about the "free" electronic surveilance available to commercial and government agencies becuase of ID cards and credit cards. The example he used was a person who uses his bank card to buy his monthly subway pass. Linking those two bits of identifier data, one can trace a typical New Yorker's daily movements, purchasing habits, and changes that fall way outside his usual customs. For me, THAT's the big deal about Apple Pay.Jim
